The Back-Taxes Catch-Up Checklist
Exactly what to gather to file past-due returns and get right with the IRS — without the panic.
Why starting now beats waiting
Millions of business owners have unfiled returns, and the IRS has a standard process for catching up. Filing — even when you can’t pay — is almost always better than not filing: the penalty for not filing is roughly ten times the penalty for not paying, and payment plans only open up once your returns are in.
The catch-up path
- Find out what the IRS already knows. Free wage and income transcripts show every W-2 and 1099 reported under your number — and whether the IRS filed a substitute return for you.
- Confirm which years you actually need. In most cases the IRS looks for the last six years — you may not need to file every missing year.
- Rebuild income year by year. Bank statements, card-processor summaries, and 1099s. Banks can usually reach back seven years — request early; it’s the slowest step.
You don’t need everything to begin
The checklist walks one section at a time, so the project stops feeling like a wall. And this is work we do with clients regularly — no judgment, just a path.
