The five audit triggers in landscaping — and the fix for each
Crew classification, 1099 matching, inflated deductions, loose cash, endless losses: how returns get flagged and how yours stays clean.
What actually gets landscaping returns flagged
- Misclassified crews. Calling workers contractors doesn’t make them contractors — control does. If you set the schedule, assign the jobs, and provide the equipment, they’re employees. Unpaid payroll taxes are the government’s favorite thing to collect. Full guide here.
- Missing or mismatched 1099s. The IRS auto-matches what subs report against what you filed. A sub reports income you never 1099’d? Instant flag. Get the filing right.
- Deductions out of line with the industry. Your numbers get compared to similar businesses. 100% business use of a vehicle with no mileage log is a classic; meals and supplies without receipts follow close behind.
- Cash with no paper trail. Cash isn’t illegal — undeposited, unrecorded cash is the problem. Deposit everything, pay expenses from the account, and your deposits tell one story: the truth.
- Losses year after year. Early losses are normal; endless ones invite the hobby-loss question. Market actively, keep records, document the push toward profit.
The protection is boring — and bulletproof
Separate accounts. Real records. Filed forms. Reasonable numbers you can support. Audits are survivable when every figure traces to a document — that’s the whole promise of the Audit-Proof Bookkeeping Checklist.
